The Main Steps International Students Need To Follow To Apply at a University in Cyprus

So, you want to study a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Cyprus (the Republic of Cyprus), where the climate is temperate and sunny and universities are generally more affordable than their European counterparts. Who can blame you?!

But now, the question is… what are the main steps international students need to follow to apply at a university in Cyprus? Let’s find out!

1. Find a university to apply to in Cyprus

Still undecided at which Cypriot university you want to enrol? Here are a few options to get you started:

  • University of Cyprus (UCY)
  • Cyprus University of Technology
  • University of Nicosia

2. Learn where to submit your university application

There is no unified application system, which means you’ll need to apply using the individual platforms or fill-in forms provided by each university.

While some higher education institutions (HEI) allow you to send the documents digitally, others expect you to send the application and copies of your documents via post.

3. Meet the university entry requirements

The admission requirements of universities in Cyprus are in line with what you’d expect at any other European institution. Some of the most common criteria include:

  • submitted application form
  • proof of paying the application fee (if applicable)
  • high school diploma (to apply for a Bachelor’s)
  • Bachelor’s diploma (to apply for a Master’s)
  • transcript of records
  • proof of English proficiency
  • proof of financial resources (to live and study there)
  • medical certificate
  • passport-sized photo(s)
  • copy of valid passport and/or personal ID
  • letter(s) of recommendation
  • personal statement

Not sure if your previous academic diplomas or certificates are recognized? Contact KYSATS, which is the official council responsible for the recognition of higher education qualifications.

4. Meet the language requirements

To study an English-taught degree in Cyprus, you will need to demonstrate your language skills are high enough. To do this, you need to pass one of these international tests:

  • IELTS Academic
  • PTE Academic

Local universities and colleges also offer English courses for internationals who don’t meet the language expectations right from the start. Don’t overlook this type of opportunity, as it can help you start studying abroad even if you’re not 100% ready.

5. Apply before the application deadlines

In Cyprus, the academic year can start in:

  • February-March: application deadlines in October-November
  • September-October: application deadlines in May-June

The exact dates can vary from one university to another. Always check the official study or university website and remember that the sooner you start your application, the less stressful the entire process gets.
