Invasion: Provost blames land grabbers, miners as Osun quizzes principal officers

The Osun State Government has commenced investigation into the invasion of a piece of land belonging to the Osun State College of Education, Ilesa, by some illegal miners.

The Senior Special Assistance to the Governor on Mineral and Natural Resources, Wahab Oyeniyi, who confirmed the development on Sunday, said government’s intervention was to prevent the matter from escalating into a crisis.

PUNCH Metro learnt that some miners had encroached on the land and commenced mining activities before a petition was written to the state government by an anonymous resident.

Oyeniyi said, “The government, through the office of the SSA Mineral and Natural Resources, intervened and that ensured peace. Investigation into the matter is still on.”

Our correspondent learnt that the Bureau of Social Services, an agency of the state government that uses human resources and technological innovation for monitoring and evaluation of social service delivery, quizzed some principal officers and staff of the college.

The Provost of the college, Prof. Labayo Kazeem, who noted that he and some officers were quizzed over the matter, said the institution was not involved in mining activities as alleged.

He said, “We have been dealing with the issue of illegal mining even before I become the provost and we have been doing everything to stop the illegal activities. Above all, our school does not even have a perimeter fence and the encroachers just come and go at will.

“It is not only the miners that are the problems; we also have issues of land grabbers who are laying claims to the land of the college and we have been battling these people. We stumbled on this when a protest letter was written that I was selling the land of the college.

“In the last couple of days, we have discovered that there are some elements in the college who were actually involved in that kind of trade and we have set up our investigations. The police and other security apparatus are involved in order to fish out the bad eggs. Those levelling baseless accusations against me are doing so because the system no longer allows them to dictate what they want again.”     ,,
